How to update ChromeOS
Updated at: Sep 27, 2024
When you are connected to the internet your Chromebook will automatically check for ChromeOS operating system updates and install them when they are found. You shouldn't normally need to prompt ChromeOS to check for updates, but if you need to force it to check for updates, here is how to do it:
- Make sure your Chromebook is connected to WiFi, otherwise it will use a lot of your mobile data quota or it may not be able to check at all
- Click the Time display in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and a menu will open
- In the menu, click Settings
- In the bottom-left corner of the panel, click About ChromeOS
- Under the Google ChromeOS heading, you will see a button that says Check for updates.
- If you don't see this option, your Chromebook may be up to date already.
- Click Check for updates and ChromeOS will check for updates to itself
- If it finds an update, it will start to download automatically
- When the download and installation has completed, restart your Chromebook to finish the installation
After you have restarted your Chromebook, you will have the latest version of ChromeOS installed. You can then check if your browser is up to date as well.
