A note on the safety of trying new web browsers

When you use any web browser, you are giving it a lot of trust. Anything you type into a web browser, any page you visit, and the contents of any page you visit, could theoretically be secretly intercepted, tampered with, and/or stolen by the browser makers, with no indication to you that it's even happening. Now, for most web browsers, this isn't the case. Most web browsers seem to be made by reputable people & organisations, and are trustworthy - but - it's important that before you just download any random web browser and start typing your passwords, banking details, and generally start using it, that you understand a bit about who made the browser and how much trust you should give them.

We haven't verified the safety or quality of any of these browsers

Just because a web browser is included in this list doesn't mean we recommend it or have tested that it is safe and works properly.

• We have not verified that any browser, download, or link here is safe
• This list is informational only; we aren't suggesting using using any of these browsers. Do your own research and make your own decisions.
• This list is meant to be as complete as possible, that means including the "bad" web browsers. However when we can, we include a warning about browsers we've heard that have problems, and we don't provide any download links for it. If you see the warning sign, be extra careful.

We have done our best to mark all the web browsers that have had reports about their safety; when you click on any of the links above - if we've found some questionable practices we'll include a big warning and try to link to any corroborating reports or forum posts and questions to help you make your own decision about the browser.

How to be more certain about the safety of a new browser

Some browsers come with extra ads or bad security practices, so before trusting a new browser you should know a bit more about it.

• Search the internet for things like "browser name safety", "browser name adware", and so on. Make sure to ignore any pages that are hosted by the company itself as most companies will put out their own pages claiming to be safe - you want to find independant reviews or comments written by actual users
• Does the browser have a Wikipedia page? A browser with a Wikipedia page gives an indication that it's not necessarily a fly-by-night scam; and that it might be reputable. But you should still read the wikipedia page, some pages will list past (or current) issues with the browser.
• Does the browser page and/or manufacturer page look reputable? If their information pages are broken or out of date then why would you trust the software they release?
• How hard is it to find reputable information about the manufacturer? Do they have a Corporate site? Is it a project with a "Team" page? Do they look reputable? Are the team images AI generated? Even little things like spelling mistakes can give away the fact that there might not be a lot of attention to detail.
• When was the last update released? Unless it's a specialised browser, if the last update wasn't done recently, the project might not be well maintained.
• Has there been any instances of poor data management from the browser manufacturer in the past? On some browsers wikipedia pages, you'll see that there are historical notes about poor data handling (sending private information unencrypted, storing incognito data, etc). Even if those problems are fixed now, its the sort of thing that can decrease confidence in the software...
