The History of Opera

Opera was created in 1994 as a research project of a Norwegian telecommunications company. In 1995 the group behind the browser was restructured into a stand-alone company named "Opera Software". The company was an early adopter of mobile platforms and in 1998 they started to develop a mobile web browser for hand-held devices.

Back in the early 2000s, the Opera browser was a brilliant alternative to the dominant browser at the time: Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Back then, I always found Opera to be much more stable, faster and more enjoyable to surf the rapidly expanding internet than Internet Explorer or any other alternatives.

Along with early versions of Firefox, Opera played a huge part in popularising browser features we now take for granted; features such as Tabbed Browsing, searching from the address bar, pop-up blocking, reopening closed pages/tabs, browser sessions, better security and better web-standards support.

I have lots of happy memories of exploring the (early-ish) web, with Opera happily handling tens and tens of open browser tabs - something unheard of in other web browsers - while I explored Slashdot, Everything2, Kuro5hin and other sites which tended to encourage a fractal-like browsing experience, instead of the more traditional linear approaches to reading.

Opera has been used as the browser for a number of gaming devices such as the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii.
